Man leads deputies, police in car pursuit through Hillsborough

TAMPA — A man who led deputies on a chase after being caught burglarizing a car was arrested early Wednesday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

The burglary was reported along River Grass Court in Tampa just after 4 a.m. When deputies arrived, they saw Richard Johnson, 29, drive off in a white Durango. Deputies pursued the car, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Larry McKinnon.

In Tampa, the burglar bailed out of the car. Deputies, with the help of Tampa police, continued to follow him.

Moments later, a deputy apprehended Johnson.

No injuries were reported during the pursuit.

Johnson faces charges of fleeing to elude, driving without a license, obstructing or opposing an officer without violence, giving a false name to a law enforcement officer, and probation violation on two previous drug charges. He was in the Hillsborough County jail Wednesday in lieu of $21,000 bail.

An investigation remained under way Wednesday.
