Man riding stolen motorcycle dies in Plant City crash

PLANT CITY — A man riding a stolen motorcycle died Tuesday night when he crashed head-on with a car in Plant City.

Tommy Jerkins, 50, of Plant City was headed north on Coronet Road about 7:39 p.m. on a 2000 Suzuki motorcycle reported stolen from the Dover area in February, according to Hillsborough sheriff's deputies.

At the same time, Jessica Alexander, 32, of Lakeland was driving south on the same road in a 2006 Saturn Ion, deputies said. At the intersection of Cason Road, she stopped and began to turn left.

The motorcycle, still headed north, went through the intersection and hit the left front corner of the car, deputies said. The bike skidded 130 feet before coming to rest in a ditch. Jerkins died at the scene.

Alexander was not injured, deputies said. Although alcohol was not suspected, she consented to a blood draw to verify that she was not impaired, officials said.
