Man struck and killed crossing Clearwater street

CLEARWATER — A 57-year-old pedestrian died after he was hit by a van Sunday night, authorities said.

The man, who police were not identifying pending notification of family, was trying to walk across Missouri Avenue about 7:40 p.m. when he was hit by a 2006 Toyota van driven by Andrew Philip Drake, 32, of Clearwater, according to Clearwater police.

The victim had been trying to cross the road from east to west just south of Turner Street, police said. Drake, who was not injured, saw the man but said he was unable to avoid hitting him.

The man was transported to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
