Man, woman in wheelchair struck by truck in Tarpon Springs

Two pedestrians were injured late Tuesday after a truck struck them on Tarpon Avenue.

Tarpon Springs Police said Carl Dearing, 57, was pushing Sue Simmons, 64, in a wheelchair through the westbound lane near Disston Avenue about 9 p.m. when both were struck by a Chevy pickup driven by Wayne Smith, 32.

Simmons and Dearing had been in the road for several blocks, witnesses told police. Smith was driving about 30 mph and couldn't see them, police said. When struck by the truck, Simmons was thrown from the wheelchair.

Simmons and Dearing were flown to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where they were listed in stable condition.

Police said the crash is under investigation.
