Moped driver seriously injured in Dunedin crash

DUNEDIN — A crash between a sport utility vehicle and a moped Monday afternoon sent a Clearwater man to the hospital with serious injuries.

Pinellas Sheriff's officials said the accident occurred at 4:36 p.m. at State Road 580 and Sunlight Drive in Dunedin. The SUV, driven by 76-year-old Janice Rachel Geoghegan, was traveling east on 580 and turned left onto Sunlight Drive. As the turn was made, the westbound moped, driven by Christopher John Taggart, 22, struck the passenger side of the SUV.

Taggart, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the moped. He was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, though his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Geoghegan, who lives in Seminole, was cited for violation of right of way, deputies said.
