Motorcyclist, 27, killed in Palm Harbor crash

PALM HARBOR — Deputies were investigating a motorcycle crash Sunday night that killed one man.

Daniel Lavoy Akins, 27, was heading west on U.S. 19 on a motorcycle while he was weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said. A deputy tried to stop him for speeding, but Akins continued. The deputy didn't pursue Akins, who was last spotted heading north on Belcher Road.

After passing Alderman Road, deputies said, Akins sped off of a curve in the road, crashed, and was thrown off the motorcycle. Two people witnessed the crash and called 911.

Akins, of Seffner, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he died Monday, deputies said.

An investigation was under way Monday.
