Motorcyclist dies in Tampa's 'malfunction junction'

TAMPA — A motorcyclist lost control of his Harley-Davidson in the intersection nicknamed "malfunction junction" Sunday morning and was catapulted from an Interstate 4 overpass onto the side of Interstate 275 below.

The 46-year-old male cyclist, whose name was not yet released but was from the country of Denmark, died at the scene, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened about 11 a.m. as the cyclist was traveling west on I-4. At the juncture of I-275, he tried to change lanes but lost control, the patrol said.

The 2013 Electra Glide struck the I-4 barrier wall and the driver was ejected over the wall and onto the shoulder of I-275 an estimated 30 feet below.

Troopers said the cyclist was wearing a helmet. The crash remains under investigation.
