Motorcyclist, scooter driver injured in Hillsborough crashes

TAMPA — A motorcyclist and a scooter rider were seriously injured in separate accidents Friday afternoon.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Randall E. Zitch, 52, of Riverview, collided with the back of a dump truck on Interstate 75 at 1:35 p.m.

Troopers said Zitch went to pass a semitrailer truck and failed to see the dump truck slowing to enter a construction area on the shoulder of southbound I-75 just north of the Bruce B Downs Boulevard exit. In an effort to avoid the crash, the motorcycle fell to the ground and slid into the back of the dump truck. Zitch was thrown off and also hit the back of the dump truck, troopers said.

Zitch was flown to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.

Around 5:40 p.m., a scooter crashed into a vehicle in the 4500 block of West Hillsborough Avenue, according to Tampa Fire Rescue. The driver was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital as a trauma alert, the agency said. The victim's identity and the severity of his or her injuries has not been released.
