New Port Richey man on wheelchair, 94, killed by semitrailer

NEW PORT RICHEY — A 94-year-old New Port Richey man crossing U.S. 19 on a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed by a semitrailer truck Thursday afternoon, police said.

Royce Merton Shean was crossing westbound in the 5100 block about 12:30 p.m. when he rode into the path of the vehicle in the northbound center lane, New Port Richey police said.

The semi's driver, Damian Gerardo Sanchez-Rodriguez, 39, of Spring Hill swerved to avoid the wheelchair, but Shean was struck by the vehicle's right front tire, police said.

Shean was ejected from the wheelchair and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The crash remained under investigation late Thursday. No charges were pending.
