North Carolina man dies in Pasco crash

One man died and another was seriously injured in a crash Friday evening on U.S. 41 and County Road 583 in Pasco County. Police said 53-year-old John Chappell of North Carolina died after he collided with another vehicle as he tried to make a U-turn in the middle of the intersection. Chappell was stopped at a red light at 5:36 p.m. on County Road 583 when he tried to turn. He went into the path of a 1994 Chevy SUV driven by Joseph Alexander of Land O'Lakes. Alexander, 20, was going southbound on U.S. 41 and ended up striking a utility pole. Chappell's car traveled across the median and struck a pillar in a gas station parking lot. He died at the scene. Alexander was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.
