Oakhurst Elementary School crossing guard injured by passing car

A Pinellas County school crossing guard was recovering Wednesday after being hit by a car while crossing a street.

At 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nelson Guenther walked across 102nd Avenue where it intersects 131st Street in unincorporated Largo while on duty for Oakhurst Elementary School, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

While Guenther was in the crosswalk, 18-year-old Richard Barbieri turned his Chevy Malibu onto 102nd Avenue, hitting Guenther in the left arm.

Guenther, who was hired as a crossing guard in December, was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries. There were no children in the area at the time he was hit.

Barbieri was cited for not stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
