Crash kills passenger, critically injures driver

One person is dead and another was in critical condition after a car crashed into a tree early Wednesday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Jaime J. Castellano, 25, of Tampa was driving a rented 2016 brown Nissan Altima eastbound on Riverview Drive about 5:40 a.m. when he lost control of the car, deputies said.

The car hit a left-hand curve, deputies said, went off the south shoulder and struck the tree.

Castellano and the car's passenger, Helemah F. Elayyan, 35, of Riverview, were not wearing seat belts, deputies said. Elayyan was sitting in the front passenger seat.

Both were transported to St. Joseph South Hospital, where Elayyan died. Castellano was later flown to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, deputies said.

The investigation is continuing.
