One dies, one badly hurt in fiery U.S. 301 crash

THONOTOSASSA — The driver of a pickup truck died in a fiery crash Monday afternoon after veering into the path of an oncoming semitrailer truck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Both directions of U.S. 301 were closed for hours near McIntosh Road as authorities investigated.

The patrol said that at about 3:20 p.m., John William Schneider, 24, of Zephyrhills was driving a Dodge Dakota north on U.S. 301.

For some reason, the patrol said, he strayed into the path of a southbound Freightliner driven by Linda Marie Wood, 51, of Tampa.

The vehicles crashed and caught on fire, troopers said, and became fully engulfed in flames.

Schneider died at the scene. Wood was airlifted in critical condition to Tampa General Hospital.
