One killed, four others seriously injured in Thonotosassa crash

THONOTOSASSA — One person died and four others were critically injured Friday afternoon in a head-on collision at U.S. 301 and Dead River Road, said Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

About 3:45 p.m., rescue crews found the driver of a minivan had been ejected and three people were trapped inside an SUV, Fire Rescue spokesman Ray Yeakley said.

The three in the minivan suffered life-threatening injuries, as did a passenger in the minivan, officials said. The injured could not be flown to a hospital because of the weather.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of the northbound 2005 Ford Expedition SUV swerved into the path of a southbound 1999 Chrysler van, .

The driver and two passengers from the Expedition were taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition, FHP said.

The minivan driver died and the passenger was taken to TGH in critical condition.

Troopers had not disclosed the victims' identities late Friday night.
