Onlookers help free motorcycle driver lodged under car on Dale Mabry Highway

TAMPA — Passers-by helped a motorcycle driver after he collided with a car and became stuck underneath it on Dale Mabry Highway on Monday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Matthew William Watson, 25, of Tampa was driving a motorcycle northbound in the inside lane on Dale Mabry Highway, south of Hamilton Avenue, around 10 a.m. Monday. He was driving fast and passing between other vehicles on the highway, troopers said.

He was behind a car driven by Jashwanti Patel, 72, of Tampa when Patel stopped for other traffic. Watson did not slow down and hit the back of Patel's car, FHP said. Watson was ejected from the motorcycle and became lodged under Patel's car.

Passers-by stopped to help get Watson out from beneath the car and he was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with critical injuries, FHP said. Patel was uninjured.
