LAND O'LAKES — A man in a Volkswagen Passat died Monday after he collided head-on with an oncoming Mack semitrailer, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 46-year-old Palm Harbor man who died was not identified because troopers had yet to notify his relatives. He was driving east on State Road 52, east of Pasco Trails Boulevard, just after 11 a.m., according to the FHP. He veered left into the westbound lanes, troopers said, and into the path of the truck driven by William Earl Bailey, 52, of Port St. Lucie.

After the crash, the 2013 sedan spun counterclockwise onto the south shoulder of SR 52, troopers said. The truck, which was carrying roof trusses, according to the FHP, jackknifed and left the road, coming to rest in a canal adjacent to the road.

Bailey suffered minor injuries and was taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson. It was unclear Monday whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, the FHP said. The driver of the Passat was wearing his seat belt but died at the scene of the crash.
