A motorcyclist died Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of U.S. 19 and Curlew Road in Dunedin.

According to Pinellas County Sheriff's Office investigators, witnesses said the 69-year-old Dana Andrew Chase of Palm Harbor lost control of his 2012 Harley-Davidson trike while attempting to make a right turn at a "high rate of speed," according to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report.

Chase, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, initially struck several plastic traffic control posts. Still on his bike, he then continued over the median on Curlew Road into oncoming traffic and hit a curb, causing the motorcycle to roll over.

Investigators said impairment and speed appear to also be a factor in the crash.

The crash occurred at 4:30 a.m.

Paramedics took Chase to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was pronounced dead.
