ZEPHYRHILLS — A 9-year-old Pasco County boy was in stable condition Sunday night after being struck by lightning as a late afternoon storm was passing through.
The child, whom authorities would not name, was standing near a fence in the Zephyrhills area around 4 p.m. when he was struck. It was not clear whether he was struck directly or whether the fence was struck and the jolt transferred to the boy, said Battalion Chief Darrell Ryals, with Pasco County Emergency Medical Services.
Ryals said the child was transported by ground to a regional hospital because air transport was not possible at the time due to the inclement weather. He wouldn't name the hospital, though Bay News 9 reported it was Tampa General Hospital.
