Pasco crash claims 83-year-old pedestrian

ZEPHYRHILLS — An 83-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed Monday morning by the driver of a minivan, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

About 11:25 a.m., John W. Bearden of Zephyrhills was walking west on County Road 54 near the intersection of U.S. 301. Witnesses said that although he was in a crosswalk, oncoming traffic had the green light.

He was struck by a Kia Sedona driven by John C. Schaeffer, 73, of Dade City, the patrol said.

Bearden was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The crash remained under investigation.
