LAND O' LAKES — A Pasco County inmate on trial for murder died in a hospital Saturday, after he dropped himself over the railing at the Land O' Lakes detention center earlier this week, authorities said.
Deputies were escorting Theodore Diller, 70, to the showers Thursday morning when he sprinted away from guards. He ran up a flight of stairs and sat on the railing, authorities said.
Deputies at the jail ordered him off the rail, but he locked his legs and hanged upside down. He let go and fell head-first onto the concrete.
Diller was rushed to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, where he was in critical condition with a brain hemorrhage.
Prosecutors said Diller killed his wife of nearly 40 years, Rhonda Diller, in 2012 at their home in Land O' Lakes. The two were in the midst of a divorce and prosecutors say Diller feared losing their lake-front home.
His trial had been going on all this past week. After Circuit Judge Mary Handsel learned of the suicide attempt, she declared a mistrial.
The Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the suicide.
