Instructor, student pilot escape injuries in Hernando plane crash

BROOKSVILLE — Emergency crews responding to a report of a plane crash at the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport on Friday arrived to find a Cessna with that suffered moderate damage during a hard landing.

Hernando County Fire Rescue received the call about 10:45 a.m. about small plane that had crashed on Runway 3 at the airport south of Brooksville. The Cessna Skyhawk was upright but suffered damage to the left wing and engine propeller, authorities said; one of its wheels was also missing.

A certified flight instructor and a student pilot based at a flight training academy in Miami were practicing approaches at the airport when the hard landing occurred. Neither was injured.

Crews cleaned up a minor fuel leak and the runaway reopened at 12:15 p.m.
