Pedestrian, 30, dies in accident that shuts Gibsonton Drive

GIBSONTON — A pedestrian crossing Gibsonton Drive was killed in a crash early Thursday that backed up traffic in both directions.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies responded to the crash about 6:15 a.m. at Gibsonton Drive and U.S. 41.

According to deputies, Chad Everett Fortney, 30, of Gibsonton was not at a crosswalk and did not have a signal when he walked across Gibsonton Drive and into the path of a westbound Ford pickup truck, driven by Mark Andrew Calvo, 43, of Riverview.

The impact sent Fortney into the eastbound traffic lanes, where he died.

The truck suffered damage to its driver-side headlights, but Calvo was uninjured.

Deputies closed both directions of Gibsonton Drive east of U.S. 41 for about three hours while they investigated.
