Pedestrian killed after car strikes him in Tampa early Friday morning

Pedestrian dies after stepping into traffic

A Tampa man died after he was struck by a car early Friday as he attempted to cross W Waters Avenue, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

At 5:48 a.m., Ivan Martinez, 30, started to cross at the intersection of Woodland Corp. Boulevard.

At the same time, a 2005 Nissan Altima, driven by Mario Raul Falcon Ramos, 49, of Tampa was traveling west on W Waters Avenue in the left lane, deputies said.

Deputies say Falcon Ramos had a green light at the intersection when Martinez walked south from the north shoulder, directly into the path of the Altima.

Falcon Ramos tried to avoid hitting Martinez but was unable to stop in time, deputies said.

Martinez died at the scene, deputies said. Falcon Ramos was not injured.
