A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday when he was struck by a car on 66th Street N.
Police said the man, who was not immediately identified, was walking away from the Checkers near the intersection of 38th Avenue N about 2 a.m. when he stepped into the road without using a crosswalk.
Ramiz Suljic, 28, of St. Petersburg was driving north on 66th Street N and approaching a green light, police said. He saw the man in the road at the last second and swerved left to avoid the pedestrian — but hit him, throwing him into the air and then to the ground.
The man was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he was pronounced dead. Police said he had a high blood alcohol content. No charges were expected, police said.
