Pedestrian killed in Tampa crash

TAMPA — A pedestrian was killed Friday night while crossing W Columbus Drive, Tampa police said.

The man, who authorities say is elderly and possibly homeless, was struck while crossing in the middle of the block.

The driver, 26-year-old Christoper Cano, was driving west in the 2900 block of Columbus about 8:30 p.m. when the man suddenly appeared in front of him. Cano, of Tampa, told police he was unable to stop or swerve in time. He has not been charged.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he died.
