Pedestrian struck by police car

ST. PETERSBURG — A man was seriously injured late Friday when he was hit by a police cruiser, authorities said.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was crossing 34th Street at Fourth Avenue N when he was struck just before 11 p.m.

Officials said witnesses saw the man running across the street into the path of the St. Petersburg police car, which was going south on 34th in the curb lane.

Officer Steven Pugh, who was on his way to a nonemergency call, swerved left to avoid the man but hit him with the front right corner of his car.

Rescuers summoned a helicopter, which transported the pedestrian to Bayfront Medical Center.

His condition was unknown Saturday morning.
