Pinellas deputy driving jail van involved in Pasco crash

NEW PORT RICHEY — A Pinellas County sheriff's deputy driving a jail inmate van crashed into another vehicle Wednesday morning, officials said.

Deputy William Copley, 44, an eight-year veteran, was driving the van when he collided with a 2003 Land Rover driven by Julie Bond, 40, of Spring Hill, at Little Road and Mitchell Boulevard, officials said.

Copley was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital for treatment and Bond was uninjured. The van Copley was driving held no prisoners at the time.

The crash occurred at about 6:40 a.m. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating. Copley, who lives in Pasco County, was driving the van to work in Pinellas County at the time of the crash. Deputies are allowed to drive their service vehicles home if they live outside of the county, officials said, but they are required to pay for the miles driven.
