Plant City motorcyclist dies of injuries following collision

PLANT CITY — A 23-year-old motorcyclist hospitalized last week after being struck by a van has died of his injuries. Ariel Perez, 23, was pronounced dead Friday at Tampa General Hospital. He was airlifted to the hospital Thursday morning after he was hit by a silver Ford van that turned into his path on S Alexander Street, police said. The van, driven by 90-year-old Rebecca Smith of Plant City, was making a left turn from the southbound lane of S Alexander Street onto W Grant Street when it collided with the 2005 Honda motorcycle, police said. Perez, who was wearing a helmet, sustained a severe head injury. Smith was uninjured. An investigation is continuing.
