Police seek help to identify hit-and-run driver

St. Petersburg Police are hoping the public can help them identify the driver who killed a woman in a hit-and-run accident Friday night on 28th Street South.

Phelestine Larose Smith, 49, was walking eastbound across 28th Street near 4th Avenue South about 7:40 p.m. Friday when she was struck by a small four-door sedan. The car sped away, and Smith later died at Bayfront Medical Center.

Police believe the car was silver and say it probably has a broken windshield.

Anyone with information regarding potential suspects or involved vehicles is asked to call the non-emergency number at 727-893-7780, Text-A-Tip to 727-420-8911 or leave a confidential tip at 727-892-5000. Reward money would be available for any significant leads provided, police said.
