Riverview man dies after colliding with roadway column

RIVERVIEW — A Riverview man died Wednesday afternoon after crashing into a concrete roadway support column near Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Gerald Thomas Kurtz, 57, was driving a Volvo north on an I-75 access road north of U.S. 301, the patrol said. For some reason, he veered and collided with a support for the access road. He died at the scene.

The patrol said Kurtz was wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was not a factor.

The crash remained under investigation.
