Riverview man dies after crash into pedestrian railing

RIVERVIEW — A young man died Wednesday after crashing into a pedestrian handrail on northbound U.S. 301, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say Kevin Byron Gomez, 19, of Riverview was headed north on U.S. 301 at 1:38 p.m. when a car cut him off.

Gomez hit the brakes, but his four-door, 1998 Volvo skidded on the wet pavement and he lost control, a preliminary accident report states.

The Volvo spun onto the sidewalk at Palmetto Street, and part of a metal pedestrian railing ripped through the rear window and trunk and came out through the windshield.

Gomez was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition and later died. His passenger, Maximo Sousa, 18 of Riverview, was not injured.

No charges have been filed, the patrol said.
