BRANDON — Troopers were investigating a fatal crash early Thursday on Interstate 75 that killed a Riverview man.
Michael A. Whelan, 31, lost control of a Nissan Frontier after trying to exit I-75 at Brandon Boulevard, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The Nissan hit the outside guardrail, flipped and Whelan was thrown from it, according to troopers. The patrol said he was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.
The crash was reported about 3:30 a.m. The southbound exit ramp to Brandon Boulevard was closed as troopers investigated.
