PINELLAS PARK — A 52-year-old man was critically injured after an apparent road rage incident that shut down the area of a U.S. 19 overpass for nearly six hours on Friday, police said.

Witnesses told police that Anthony Powell, 30, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado when they saw him cut off a truck as both drove north on the 8600 block of 49th Street around 4:30 p.m. Moments later, when Powell was underneath the overpass, police said he tried to cut off a second truck, which is when he lost control of his car.

The Silverado crossed over the median and into the exit ramp lanes for U.S. 19, police said. It hit an uninvolved Nissan Xterra being driven by Timothy Ilyes. Powell's car overturned, coming to a stop upside down. Ilyes' car was destroyed, and he was sent to a nearby hospital. Police said he is stable, but has critical injuries. Powell and his passenger were not injured.

Powell's vehicle did not make contact with the second truck, which did not stay on the scene. Pinellas Park police are working with the Pinellas County State Attorney's Office due to the "nature of the investigation," according to a news release.

Police said charges are pending, but Powell could faces charges of driving recklessly and causing an injury.

Police ask that if anyone witnessed any part of the crash or the road rage incident, or know the other drivers involved, they call investigators at (727) 369-7864.
