School bus and SUV crash in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG — A school bus and sport utility vehicle crashed on Friday afternoon, blocking traffic at 38th Avenue N and Interstate 275.

No children were on board the bus at the time of the crash, according to St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Lt. Joel Granata. Both drivers were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

The crash was reported at 3:34 p.m., authorities said, and took place underneath Interstate 275.

The wreck closed down 38th Avenue N between 16th and 21st streets and also shut down the northbound on-ramp to I-275.

According to St. Petersburg police, a black 1998 Ford Explorer was traveling on 38th Avenue N when the driver tried to turn left and onto the northbound on-ramp. But police said the SUV did not yield for the oncoming school bus.

The collision forced the bus up onto the sloping concrete wall of the overpass. Drivers were warned to avoid the area until the mess was cleaned up.
