Second victim of fatal moped crash identified as 14-year-old Tampa girl

TAMPA — A teenager who died when the moped she and two others were on late Sunday when struck by a car has been identified by authorities.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Tuesday the victim is Claudia Gelpi, 14, of West Tampa.

According to the Hillsborough County School District, she was enrolled last year at Pierce Middle School but not now enrolled at a public school in the county.

She was one of three on a moped struck by a hit-and-run driver near Dale Mabry Highway and Busch Boulevard, troopers said. Another passenger, 16-year-old Michael Garcia of Tampa, also died in the crash. The operator, Cameron Maddox, 19, was hospitalized in serious condition.

The driver of the car, Amanda Angelica Diaz, 23, of Tampa was found at her home after the crash, the patrol said. Records show her driver's license had been suspended in September.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the patrol had not filed charges.
