Semi overturns on I-75 near Tampa when driver falls asleep

TAMPA — A semitrailer truck overturned Wednesday night on northbound Interstate 75 after the driver fell asleep behind the wheel, authorities said.

The crash happened on I-75 near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. Firefighters were on the scene about 10:15 p.m., the agency said.

After the driver fell asleep, the semi struck a pole and the guardrail in the median and then overturned, spilling about 50 gallons of diesel fuel on the road.

Fire Rescue's Hazardous Incident Team was removing the remaining gasoline late Wednesday night before the truck, which carried flour, could be removed.

Two lanes of northbound traffic were closed while crews worked.
