TAMPA — Nine passengers 1 to 16 years old escaped serious injury when the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban lost control on Interstate 4, causing the vehicle to flip, spin and hit a fence, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Keith Odell Carson II, 29, of Tampa was headed east on I-4, towing a trailer, when he lost control of the 2009 Suburban just before 4 p.m. Sunday east of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the highway patrol said.

Neither Odell nor his only adult passenger, Natasha Binion Darius, 26, of Tampa, were injured.

Four of the nine children in the vehicle received minor injuries. They are ages 5, 6, 10 and 16. Five people in the vehicle were transported to Tampa General Hospital.

An earlier news release from the highway patrol reported incorrectly that seven of the children received serious injuries.

Carson was ticketed on three counts of having passengers under 18 who were not wearing seatbelts, the highway patrol said.
