Sheriff's Office investigates crash involving Pinellas deputy, moped

CLEARWATER — The Pinellas sheriff's deputies investigated a crash involving a deputy and a moped early Friday.

The accident happened at 12:48 a.m. at the intersection of Bolesta Road and Roosevelt Boulevard.

The early indications are that the moped hit the Pinellas deputy's 2009 Ford Crown Victoria from behind as both drove westbound on Roosevelt. The deputy slowed as he neared the intersection but the moped did not, said Sgt. Tom Nestor, sheriff's spokesman.

Deputy Harry Harris, 41, was driving through the area as part of a search for suspects involved in an earlier shooting, Nestor said.

The man on the moped, George Howell, 35, of Clearwater was not wearing a helmet, deputies said. He was ejected from the moped and taken to Largo Medical Center for injures that were not life-threatening.

Harris, hired in 1999, was not injured.

The investigation continues.
