South Pasadena fire chief hurt in crash

The chief of the South Pasadena Fire Department was hospitalized Tuesday with minor injuries after an accident involving a fire department sport utility vehicle in St. Petersburg.

Fire Chief Dayton Saltsman was driving Tuesday afternoon in a fire department Ford Explorer near the intersection of Fourth Street N and 54th Avenue when he was hit by another vehicle, authorities said.

The chief was temporarily trapped inside the Explorer, officials said. Emergency crews extricated him from the vehicle and he was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with minor injuries, officials said.

At least one other person from the other car was also hospitalized, officials said.
