Patrons at the Port Richey Hooters looked out over the Pithlachascotee River about 6 p.m. Thursday and saw a speeding SUV run off Sunset Road and into the water. Within seconds, a man popped up from the river while the white vehicle, described as a BMW, disappeared. Emergency personnel dove into the water to check for passengers but found none.
Police handcuffed the driver, Jerell Reshawn, 23, of Tampa. He was held for a mental evaluation under the state's Baker Act and taken to Community Hospital in New Port Richey, police said.
