St. Petersburg man, 82, walks away from overturned car after crash

ST. PETERSBURG — Fred Wappler's red Ford Explorer was flipped on its side, and firefighters worked frantically to tear it open to get him out.

But the 82-year-old surprised them.

"Wow! That was a better ride that those at Disney!" said Wappler, who walked away from the crash Monday after he was rescued from the car, according to firefighters.

Wappler's car was struck by a 2002 Geo Tracker driven by Laurie Lynne, 41, of St. Petersburg, at Eighth Street and Fourth Avenue N at 1:27 p.m., officials said.

Wappler, of St. Petersburg, did not appear hurt and he refused medical observation at the scene, said Lt. Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire Rescue. Friends drove the octogenarian home.

No charges have been filed.
