ST. PETERSBURG — A 48-year-old woman was seriously injured Friday afternoon after being struck by a car.
Susan Leenhouts, of 460 93rd Ave. N, was trying to cross Fourth Street near her home when a 1994 Ford driven by Jenna Grage, 17, of St. Petersburg hit her.
Police said the teenager slammed on her brakes but could not avoid Leenhouts, who had never slowed walking from the raised center median. Other cars in front of her also tried to swerve.
Investigators said that as Leenhouts was crossing, she was leaning forward with her head tilted toward her left, away from the traffic.
"This is possibly a medical condition she suffers from," police wrote in a news release.
Leenhouts struck her head on the pavement after hitting Grage's hood and windshield. She was in serious condition at Bayfront Medical Center. No other details were released late Friday night.
