St. Petersburg pedestrian struck by SUV, breaks hip

ST. PETERSBURG — A 58-year-old man suffered a broken hip when he was struck by an SUV while crossing Fourth Street N on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Carl Hirsch, who was described as a transient, was walking west across Fourth Street near the 800 block when he stopped in the middle of the street, police said.

A northbound car stopped to let Hirsch try to finish crossing the road, police said.

The 16-year-old driver of an oncoming 2006 Mercury SUV apparently didn't see Hirsch as he crossed into her path in the far lane and struck him. Police got the call at 12:57 p.m.

Hirsch was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.
