St. Petersburg police: Driver on phone strikes, kills pedestrian

ST. PETERSBURG — A driver using his cell phone failed to see a man walk in front of him Friday night and ran over and killed the pedestrian, authorities said.

According to St. Petersburg police, Edward Austin Jablon III, 24 of Largo, was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser west on Fifth Avenue N about 10 p.m. when a pedestrian walked out of a parking lot near St. Anthony's Hospital to cross the street just east of a crosswalk.

"Jablon was distracted by the use of his cell phone and he failed to observe the pedestrian in the roadway," police wrote in a news release.

The pedestrian, identified by police as Walter H. Weaver Jr., 59, was taken to Bayfront Hospital St. Petersburg, where he was declared dead. Police said Weaver was a homeless man with ties to Liberty, Ky.

Friday's crash remains under investigation and no charges have been announced.
