St. Petersburg police identify woman injured in bicycle crash

ST. PETERSBURG -A bicyclist who collided with a car Friday night is in serious condition, authorities said.

The accident happened at about 10 p.m. on 49th Street near 40th Avenue N.

Police said Amanda Caneal, 29, of St. Petersburg, was northbound in the east curb lane when, for an unknown reason, she began riding diagonally across lanes of traffic and into the path of a 1997 Mercury that was also northbound. The vehicle was being driven by William Sabol, 23, of Gulfport.

"Caneal had no reflectors, no lights, and was wearing dark clothing," a press release said. "Sabol attempted to brake, but struck Caneal with his right front bumper."

Caneal was thrown to the pavement and taken to Bayfront Medical Center as a trauma alert. Sabol was not injured.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident. An investigation is ongoing.
