ST. PETERSBURG — Four were hospitalized after a crash between an unmarked St. Petersburg police car and another car Sunday evening, authorities said.

About 7:35 p.m., the police cruiser, a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, was southbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S. Officer Gregory Shone was on his way to assist another officer and had his emergency lights and siren turned on, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Meanwhile, a 2000 Nissan Maxima driven by Lura Goldsmith, 47, of Greenville, S.C., was eastbound on 20th Avenue S.

Police said Goldsmith turned left from a stop sign onto Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street into the path of the police car.

Shone tried to swerve, but the left front of the Nissan smashed into the front of his cruiser, police said. The cruiser slid down the road and came to rest after striking a wooden fence.

Shone, Goldsmith and Goldsmith's passengers, Grace Hoilett, 39, of St. Petersburg, and 5-year-old Elijah Hoilett, 5, of St. Petersburg, were taken to Bayfront Medical Center with minor injuries. Authorities said they were treated and released.

Police charged Goldsmith with driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence.
