St. Petersburg woman, 83, dies after being struck by van in crosswalk

SOUTH PASADENA — An 83-year-old woman died Monday after being struck by a car as she tried to cross the road, authorities said.

Margherita Trupiano, of St. Petersburg, was hit by a northbound Ford Econo-Line van at about 10:30 a.m. Monday on Pasadena Avenue S at Majestic Way.

Trupiano had taken only a few steps into the crosswalk when she was hit, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

The van's driver, Emile Daniel, 54, of St. Petersburg, was going north on Pasadena when he hit the woman. Daniel was not injured.

Trupiano was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where she died at about 1 p.m.

Authorities said neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.

There is a traffic signal at the "T-shaped" intersection. Officials said they were still investigating who had the right-of-way.
