DUNEDIN — A man drowned Sunday afternoon trying to help some children who appeared to be in distress off the pet beach at Honeymoon Island State Park, authorities said.
According to Florida Department of Environmental Protection press secretary Jennifer Diaz, a boater came to the aid of the children and another tried to swim to help them when he, too appeared in distress.
Emergency personnel transported him to Mease Dunedin Hospital, but he did not survive.
The man's name had not been released. The DEP's law enforcement division was still investigating, Diaz said.
Authorities said strong rip currents have plagued the waters off the park for the last few days.
