Tampa bicyclist dies after hit by car on I-4 ramp

TAMPA — A 52-year-old bicyclist died on an Interstate 4 ramp Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by one vehicle swerving out of the way of another, authorities said.

Marcus Fowler of Tampa was pedaling west on the shoulder of the I-4 exit ramp to U.S. 301 around 4 p.m. when Ruben Batista, 47 of Zephyrhills, and two passengers were traveling east on U.S. 301. The Florida Highway Patrol said Batista improperly switched lanes into the path of Nicholas Adam Sarazin, 24 of Tampa.

Sarazin swerved to avoid a collision, the patrol said, but struck Fowler's bicycle, propelling him off his bike onto the concrete.

Fowler died at the scene. No one else sustained injuries.

The crash remained under investigation.
