TAMPA — A driver authorities say ran a red light died early Sunday in a fiery crash.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Michael Gregory Backus, 20, of Odessa was driving a sport utility vehicle about 5:30 a.m. north on Dale Mabry Highway. He ran a red light, the patrol said, and collided with another SUV attempting to turn on a green light from southbound Dale Mabry onto Bearss Avenue.
Backus' SUV overturned and caught fire. He died at the scene.
The occupants of the other SUV — Edward Scanlon, 49, of Tampa and Michael Scanlon, 43, of North Carolina — suffered serious injuries, the patrol said. They were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.
The crash remained under investigation Sunday.
